Read Ephesians 4:11-16
Corks and rocks have very different relationships with the water. Corks move with the waves; rocks make waves. The same is true for our interaction with the world around us. Sometimes we just bob along, listening to the advice, “Don’t make waves.” We’re corks. But true Christ followers don’t have this option. We are called to resist the tide of our culture and transform the world around us.

In what part of your life are you just bobbing along with the expectations and habits
of your environment? How could you stand against the tide in these areas?
Choose one commitment you can make this week to be a rock and not a cork. Tell your plan to a friend who can help you make waves.

I love this passage. God casts the vision for his church. Why did God give some to be pastors and teachers? To prepare God’s people for works of service, equipping and supporting them. Why? So that the body of Christ (the church) may be built up. As some worship, some play instruments, some pray, some take care of our children, we are all strengthened. What does that look like? Unity, knowledge of Son of God. What does God want for us? To become mature and to attain the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. I believe “fullness of Christ” is Christ-like character, of fruit of the Holy Spirit Galatians 5:22 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.) Also, studying the life of Christ and asking, “What would Jesus do?”

Bobbing along for me means being passive about becoming more like Christ. To stand against complacency, I commit to praying more this week.

Our family is on our 6th day of not easting at restaurants. We are giving them up for Devoted. We are hoping to free up some money as well as praying that it draws our family closer to God and each other. It is inconvenient and I am tempted to compromise. I am praying every day for the strength to stay committed. Such a small thing compared to what others are asked to sacrifice for God.

I love the thought of not bobbing with the waves, but instead making waves. I think we can do this, not by being the loudest or coming against everything others stand for, but instead demonstrating the fruits of the spirit. We can make waves just by demonstrating kindness, patience and self-control. We can show joy and peace in the midst of trials. I commit to praying that God will help me to display fruits of the Spirit.

It is so hard to let go when you are floating along with flow but we need to not only let go but also make waves high enough for others to see they are floating toward rapids!
